Initial interview, then 20 - 40 sessions of 30 minutes each.
Brain training requires practice to become permanent. A course of treatment
starts with a comprehensive interview and then usually twenty to forty sessions
of 30 minutes each are needed to make the training permanent. After these
practice sessions the brain will continue to make the efficient brain-waves
without needing the neurofeedback training for reinforcement.
The initial consultation with Dr. Parker requires 2 to 3 hours of
comfortable give-and-take questions to fully explore the client's history and
to outline the way his or her brain responds to life's stresses. The questions
will identify how the left and right sides of the brain deal with stresses and
how they communicate with each other. The client's specific problem areas and
goals will be fully explored so that a unique and individualized treatment plan
can be established. The client will then spend 30 minutes doing neurofeedback
so that his or her ideal training frequency can be identified and individual
responses to high and low frequencies can be mapped.
The practice sessions require approximately 45 minutes. The client is
seated in a comfortable chair. Three flexible electrodes are pasted onto the
scalp with a washable paste and the client watches a video game on a computer
screen. The video game characters are controlled by the client's brain-waves.
In a gentle and comfortable way the game responds each time clear and relaxed
brain-waves are produced. After 30 minutes of practice the electrodes are
removed, the paste is gently removed with an alcohol pad, and the client is
ready to go.
Scheduling can be tailored to fit the client's schedule. The usual
schedule is for two or three sessions a week for two weeks, then gradually
decreasing to once a week. Clients traveling longer distances may request more
than one session a day (divided by an hour of rest time). Treatments can also
be limited to the weekends if requested, and "marathon sessions" can be
arranged if needed to accommodate those who can only arrange periodic trips.
After a course of treatment has been accomplished clients may request
occasional "booster" sessions once or twice a year as needed to maintain
peak performance.
